Penguins!

I don't know about you, but when it looks like this outside my window...

...I feel inspired to add a little bit of Antarctica into our studies!

And while there are tons of fascinating animals in Antarctica, you just can't beat penguins for unique, fascinating, AND adorable.

In case you feel the same, I have two free resources for you today! One is for beginning readers in primary, and one is for older elementary students.

For the littles, incorporate science into your literacy block with these mixed-up sentences. Just cut out the cards and mix them up. Students find the cards with the same clip art, and then rearrange them until they get a complete sentence. To extend the activity, they can write down the sentence or illustrate it. Or you might have some easy readers on penguins available so they can find out more penguin facts! There are simple four-card sentences, and longer, more complex sentences, too.

For older students, cut out the task cards and put them on a ring or in an envelope. Use them in a center or for your fast finishers. They'll learn penguin facts and practice some skills that always need review, like measurement and map reading.

And if you are working on multiplication fact fluency, you might be interested in this set of printable games. No prep for you, and fun and skill building for your students!

Teaching Cognates Free Printables

Cognates are an integral part of developing a person's new vocabulary. If you are an English speaker you are fortunate in that much of the English language is comprised from numerous languages. Therefore, many words in Spanish resemble words in English and if studied should provide the Spanish student a quick source of building a strong Spanish vocabulary.

Cognates are words in two languages that share a similar meaning, spelling. and pronunciation.

30 -40% of English words have a related word in Spanish.
For learners of English as a second or foreign language, cognates are a bridge to the English language.
Cognate awareness is the ability to use cognates as a tool for understanding a new language.
Children can be taught to use cognates as early as preschool. They feel confident when they can master cognates because they are very similar to their mother tongue.
There are many cognates, but I choose the most familiar for my kids such as chocolate, pizza, pasta, television, computer, sofa, etc
Teaching cognates help children to transfer knowledge from one language to the other and to build anchor charts.
These are some printables I made for my centers. You can download them free in my blog.

Capital letters in Spanish

Hi! I am Lita Lita from Learning in Spain.
I teach 1st-2nd graders in a Spanish school. We have a bilingual program and sometimes it is difficult for our students to remember when some spelling rules.

When the same teacher teaches both languages in the same classroom students might mix the rules. That's why I create anchor charts all the time. I have separate walls for each language so they don't get confused.

The kids loved referring to them and some copied them. That's why I created 'fill in the gaps anchor charts'. We use them to review or evaluate. The kids file them in their language binders and we staple them together at the end of the year to create a spelling reference book.

This is an example: Capital Letters.

We do not use capital letters for months or days of the week in Spanish. It is easier than that.

Spanish Movie Vocabulary, Activities, and FREEBIES!

Looking for some funny, and modern movies to show in your Spanish classes?  If you haven't done it already, it's time to throw away all those VHS tapes from the 80's! ;)

One great film to use is "Casi Casi" (2006)! Your students will love it! It is about a group of high school students in Puerto Rico so your kids will be able to relate to it. It is also a great opportunity to teach them more about Puerto Rico, and Puerto Rican culture. Another option is "Valentin", (2002).  It is a cute story told by a young boy in Argentina. It is a great film to show during a unit on childhood.

Stop by Liz's Lessons Blog to find out more about these products, to pick up FREE word cloud activities for each film, and to watch the trailers of these movies.
